Sony/ATV Acquires Savage Garden Catalog
Posted Friday, March 27, 2009 by lssilver

By Andre Paine, London

Sony/ATV Australia has acquired the worldwide publishing rights to the Rough Cut Music catalog, including all of Savage Garden's hit songs. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Sydney-based music publisher's catalog also includes successful songwriters and artists from Australasia such as Evermore, Kisschasy and the Butterfly Effect.

Savage Garden had worldwide success, selling over 25 million albums and 15 million singles written by band members Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones, according to a statement from Sony/ATV. The band's hits, released by Columbia, included "Truly Madly Deeply," "I Knew I Loved You," "I Want You" and "To The Moon And Back." They split in 2001.

"Savage Garden's Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones are world-class songwriters whose music has withstood the test of time," said Martin N. Bandier, Chairman and CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, in a statement. "We are delighted that their songs, along with the songs of the well-known Australian groups like Evermore, Kisschasy and The Butterfly Effect are now a part of the ever-growing Sony/ATV roster."

Upon the sale of their catalog, CEO John Woodruff and business partners Karen Hamilton, catalog manager, and GM Keith Welsh, said they were pleased that the catalog had ended up with Sony/ATV.

"We believe that Sony/ATV is exactly the right new home for our writers," said their joint statement. "Marty Bandier was involved with Darren and Daniel in the early days of Savage Garden when he was at EMI, [Sony/ATV Australia managing director] Damian Trotter and his team are excellent music people who we know will give great support to all the writers and artists we have had the pleasure of developing over the years. We thank each and every writer we have worked with - to be actively involved with such talented people is an inspiring way to live."

Sony/ATV also acquired a second company, Second Pressing, as part of the deal. The acquisitions include various administration deals.

Prior to the deal, Second Pressing collected Rough Cut royalties in Australia, while Warner/Chappell handled the rights for the rest of the world. Some of the Warner/Chappell rights to the catalog expired before this deal, at the beginning of 2009.

Damian Trotter added: "Obviously, we are all extremely excited to be custodians of such internationally recognized pop gems as those penned by Darren and Daniel of Savage Garden, but we are also very much looking forward to working with great artists like Kisschasy, Evermore and the many other excellent writers that John, Keith and Karen have developed within the Rough Cut stable and look forward to carrying on their great work in developing and furthering their careers."

Posted Sunday, September 18, 2005 by lssilver

SAVAGE GARDEN

‘TRULY MADLY COMPLETELY – THE BEST OF SAVAGE GARDEN’

OUT ON NOVEMBER 7TH INTERNATIONALLY
(JAPAN – NOVEMBER 1ST)

US RELEASE SLATED FOR EARLY 2006

AND THE BRAND NEW SINGLE FROM
DARREN HAYES OF SAVAGE GARDEN

‘SO BEAUTIFUL’

OUT ON OCTOBER 31ST (outside North America)

With sales of over 23 million, Savage Garden are one of the most successful duos of all time. Four years after parting company to pursue their own music careers, 'Truly Madly Completely - The Best Of Savage Garden' celebrates the time they spent together and is jam packed with their mega hits.

With unforgettable lyrics and killer choruses, Savage Garden wrote, produced and performed a seemingly endless string of hits, re-inventing the pop world with their authentic style and undeniable talent.

Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones released their eponymous debut album in 1997 and within just a few short months had taken the world by storm. Spawning three global hits: ‘I Want You’ ,‘To The Moon And Back’ and the record-breaking ‘Truly Madly Deeply’ (which topped the American Billboard charts for an incredible nine weeks), 'Savage Garden' hit the #1 slots on both the Australian ARIA and UK album charts before going on to sell 11 times platinum around the world. That same year, the Australian duo won an unprecedented 10 ARIA Awards.

Their sophomore album ‘Affirmation’ matched this success. It produced their second US Billboard #1 with ‘I Knew I Loved You’, and the massive hits ‘The Animal Song’, ‘Affirmation’ and ‘Crash and Burn’.

'Truly Madly, Completely - The Best of Savage Garden' (in stores November 7th – in all markets except Japan (November 1st) and the US (where it will be out early next year)) is a collection of all of the band's chart-topping hits featured alongside two brand new songs from singer-songwriter Darren Hayes ('So Beautiful' and 'California Home'). The first single 'So Beautiful', which Darren co-wrote with Robert Conley and co-produced with top American producer Mark Endert (Maroon 5, Gavin DeGraw), will be in stores on October 31st (in those markets that release singles commercially outside the US). Its emotive lyrics and memorable chorus echo the remarkable pop sensibility of Savage Garden, highlighting Hayes's phenomenal ability to captivate and transport his audience - not only with his extraordinary voice, but also with his beautiful turn of phrase and incredible sense of melody. The upcoming single heralds yet another new beginning for Darren Hayes, whose third solo album is set for release in the New Year.

Savage Garden Member Makes A Wish

12 October 2004

Former Savage Garden founder Daniel Jones is actively working on a forthcoming album for new act Wish.

Wish is the first local signing to Michael Matthews and Bill Kio's new label Lincoln Road. The pair formerly managed the business of Killing Heidi.

Wish is Melbourne singer/guitarist and songwriter Peter Freebairn.

"It's not often that I see the same innocence and purity of songwriting that helped me with my career. These songs could easily be a 'trigger point' that will hold you at the first listen & then become a soundtrack to your life. The emotion is real & that's needed in a world that tries to cover what we really feel. This is truly an international recording".

Jones has gathered many of Brisbane's finest to perform on the Wish debut. Powderfinger guitarist Darren Middleton is expected to contribute.

Lincoln Road will license the album through a major label when it is complete and are giving interested A&R managers a chance to hear the work to date from October 25 in Brisbane.

A&R people interested in hearing the project can contract Michael Matthews on 0418 536 637 or email michael@lincolnroadent.com.

Jones will also be spreading the Wish word at the ARIA's this weekend.

What is Daniel Up To?
Posted Thursday, April 15, 2004 by lssilver

Many of you may be wondering what the other half of Savage Garden Daniel Jones is up to these days ...

Wheatley singles out next Delta
By NUI TE KOHA

POPSTARS finalist Julie Strickland has been revealed as manager Glenn Wheatley's latest pop weapon.

After months of secrecy about his post-Delta pop signing, Wheatley finally revealed Strickland's identity.
"We are in the process of finishing her forthcoming album, which we are very excited about," Wheatley said. "This girl is hot."

Strickland, 22, is working in the studio with Daniel Jones, formerly of the hit-making duo Savage Garden.

Jones has lent his multi-platinum touch to songs for Strickland's debut.

The tracks are said to have the same pop formula that made Savage Garden global chart-toppers with 40 million record sales.

Wheatley has similar ambitions for Strickland.

He wants Strickland's first single, which is yet to be decided, to have an immediate impact.

"I have a very good feeling about this," Wheatley said.

"Out of 20 songs, we've been able to identify four that have the potential to launch this act.

"We need to pick the right song to introduce her to everybody."

Wheatley's management deal with Delta Goodrem ended two weeks ago.

Until now he has deliberately kept Strickland out of the spotlight to avoid comparisons with Goodrem.

Strickland was a finalist in the third series of Popstars.

A favourite to win, Strickland was voted off the show in favour of Scott Cain.

"I'm a big believer in fate and in what's meant to be is meant to be, and that everything happens for the good," Strickland said at the time.

"There is something better for me out there."

Her sister, Lee, was a shoulder to cry on.

She predicted the Popstars exposure would lead Strickland to a recording career.

"She's amazing. She's a really special person. She's got an amazing gift that she can do so much with," Lee said.

Strickland will be signed to Meridien Records, a joint venture run by Wheatley and Jones.

Daniel has also been spotted in London by fans (he is apparently there with his fiance Kathleen DeLeon who is touring with Hi-5).

Savage Garden Central Updates
Posted Sunday, March 7, 2004 by lssilver

I am currently in the process of making the content of Savage Garden Central available again over the next week or so. This is something I have been meaning to do for quite some time now but due to other commitments it hasn't happened until now.

Just a couple of general updates for now:

* Daniel Jones and Kathleen DeLeon are engaged to be married
* There is no release date set for the Savage Garden 'Greatest Hits' release, despite many online stores still listing this release (with dates that seem to be changing fairly regularly).

Until next time ...

Greatest Hits Delayed
Posted Wednesday, August 27, 2003 by lssilver

The Savage Garden Greatest Hits CD that was originally planned for release has been delayed until a suitable tracklist can be determined thanks to a request by band members Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones.

What this means is that it is unlikely that we will see this CD anytime soon even though Sony Music does have the rights to release it.

For Australians there is not currently a Greatest Hits cd planned for release (unlike the rest of the world).
